working and learning + working and rendering + working and living

The last two weeks of my life have been crazy to say the least. 2.5 months into my stay at TAXI and I found myself up to my armpits in rendering huge files for our 15th birthday. Compiling old spots and print ads plus pop culture references from years dating back to 1992, really made me realize how far I’ve come and how further ahead we are on this planet. Now that the party is over and the files have been backed up. I’m onto bigger things, one of which is diving head deep back into the world of flash to better skill myself in the ways of fine programming, something to which I’ve left by the wayside in favor of recycling the same old cruddy code I’ve developed over the past 2 years of not deving flash like I used too. Oh how it feels to learn again.
At the same time I’ve been busy at home, while the studio’s dance season came to a close I found myself working nonstop to get everything done for everybody. Plus with Emily and Jen at home I felt like my time with them was slim, but I tried my best to make due.

Two projects in addition to this already heavy workload were the updated Franco Shade and Jug websites.
jug

Prolly the simplest site I’ve done in a while a small site for Jug Shoes and Liners. Simple and to the point. There is going to be a blog added and we are just sorting out the database things with that.

frsh

Obviously taking far longer than I wanted it too is the new FRSH site. Now fully flash on the front end I have a few menu tweeks under the hood that I wanted to take care of most of which you’ll never see, but its a personal thing. New stuff to be added shortly.

francoshade.com

some new work from home.

at night after I put the fam to bed I sit up on my lappy and hammer out sites for friends. I’ve been doing it for a while. Helps to fill the creative void sometimes and I get free shit in returm. (thanks JOE!)

My black brother matt is a motion graphics designer, skater and all round super chill dude. I’ve been meening to make him a site for close to 2 years, we are notoriously bad at getting our shit together and thus designs sat un-used for a while. Matt came up with silkyblackgold.com a great URL. I worked up this site as a partial challenge to myself and a challenge to him to fill it with his dope work.

I think the site turned out great for the time it was given, I even learned a thing or two along the way. Under the hood there is an XML backend which matt can update, some jpegs here and there and some FLV’s round out teh assets this thing loads on the fly…. dope stuff.

enjoy silkyblackgold.com and look out for an updated franco shade site, which I started tonight.

client love…

One of the best things I think about doing freelance work is that you get a little present from the client when the job is done, sometimes you make exchanges for things you would normally buy, I’m into that free stuff kinda mindframe, but lately I’ve been into the money as well. One personal client that gets it is Joe from Franco Shade. Quite possibly one of the finest clients to have for a multitude of reasons.

1. Carte blanche, thats right. I rarly have to do more than one comp to gets Joes sign off which means he trust me to do something good.
2. Hes always pushing you and getting hyped on the things your doing.
3. He sends me boxes with both product and MONEY!

So yesterday I got a box at the front door, I was staying late at work and jen went home and told me my frsh box was waiting for me, stoked I was. here is the rundown of a well packed box

Franco Shade 06 – start

franco shade 06

Last night I really got started on the new franco site. Pulled down the current site and put up a placeholder for new things to come. Its kind of an emotional experience taking down a site you worked hard at. But once the new site gets up I’ll feel better about the whole thing. However this time unlike other projects I’ve done I’ll have the whole thing backed up on my own portfolio site which has taken a backseat to my current workflow at home.

So hopefully if everything goes well then there should be a new Franco catalog site up mid april with some more treats this time included to keep the site bangin.

its been about a week since I blogged about anything so I though I would giv’er and post something. Weekend is over birthday with the parents on saturday night, where we went to caseys and got full on good foood, headed back to our house for apple pie and icecream, I’m not one for cake and got a pie instead.

Presents ensued from mom and dad, a 12 foot ladder which I really needed since we have some burnt out lights on the house i cant reach even at 6+ feet tall. Some DVD’s, sin city extended edition, 40 year old virgin, wedding crashers and corpse bride. Plus this black and decker handy drill thing, looks like a little gun, will be great cause i know its goign to stay charged like the box says for up to 18 months, NIIIICE.

sunday we did the dance experience showcase for competitive dances, whole day 9 till around 5:30, took about 300 pictures of the dances, and generally helped out, ate subs for lunch which were good since the last subs we had were not so great for the stomach.

later on that night got some belated birthday presents gift card to henrys which will go towards something camera like and mostlikely a lense, plus a EB games gift card which should do me for a new PSP game.

thats about it, updated and re-designed portfolio is about 80% done, jsut need to put in the content like the quicktimes etc then fix so that its live.
