The last two weeks of my life have been crazy to say the least. 2.5 months into my stay at TAXI and I found myself up to my armpits in rendering huge files for our 15th birthday. Compiling old spots and print ads plus pop culture references from years dating back to 1992, really made me realize how far I’ve come and how further ahead we are on this planet. Now that the party is over and the files have been backed up. I’m onto bigger things, one of which is diving head deep back into the world of flash to better skill myself in the ways of fine programming, something to which I’ve left by the wayside in favor of recycling the same old cruddy code I’ve developed over the past 2 years of not deving flash like I used too. Oh how it feels to learn again.
At the same time I’ve been busy at home, while the studio’s dance season came to a close I found myself working nonstop to get everything done for everybody. Plus with Emily and Jen at home I felt like my time with them was slim, but I tried my best to make due.

Two projects in addition to this already heavy workload were the updated Franco Shade and Jug websites.

Prolly the simplest site I’ve done in a while a small site for Jug Shoes and Liners. Simple and to the point. There is going to be a blog added and we are just sorting out the database things with that.

jugshoes.com

Obviously taking far longer than I wanted it too is the new FRSH site. Now fully flash on the front end I have a few menu tweeks under the hood that I wanted to take care of most of which you’ll never see, but its a personal thing. New stuff to be added shortly.

at night after I put the fam to bed I sit up on my lappy and hammer out sites for friends. I’ve been doing it for a while. Helps to fill the creative void sometimes and I get free shit in returm. (thanks JOE!)

My black brother matt is a motion graphics designer, skater and all round super chill dude. I’ve been meening to make him a site for close to 2 years, we are notoriously bad at getting our shit together and thus designs sat un-used for a while. Matt came up with silkyblackgold.com a great URL. I worked up this site as a partial challenge to myself and a challenge to him to fill it with his dope work.

I think the site turned out great for the time it was given, I even learned a thing or two along the way. Under the hood there is an XML backend which matt can update, some jpegs here and there and some FLV’s round out teh assets this thing loads on the fly…. dope stuff.

enjoy silkyblackgold.com and look out for an updated franco shade site, which I started tonight.

Day to day I work on some similar brands, matter of fact they are basically 100% automotive and even then I’m down to a few brands I deal with exclusively if you will.

Being a person of constant change my mind gets going on what it would be like to work on some “dream clients” every designer has them, their top tier clients they would perhaps lay a portion of their body and soul down for some quality design time. Some of mine are as follows.

Burton
Pretty much wanted to work for them since I started snowboarding in the 6th grade. JDK has been their agency for the last 20 odd years, chance of me doing work for them and not being employed by JDK = slim to none, since I dont think I’ll be moving to Burlington Vermont any time soon.

Nokia
Heck yes, other than Palm my most fav phone company. They are constantly making cool stuff plus I’m all into cell phones, Their canadian site is in dire need of attention. However their microsites for different phone lines have been good like the N series phones.

Nike / Nike SB
Since selling shoes for 5 years had a profound influence on my life this is an obvious choice. The nike SB site done by the odopod folks kicks my ass all the damn time. Simple and effective. Nike knows how to do big stuff right their global site is nice plus the ability to do big time flash projects would rock with budgets that would make my life easyier.

Nintendo
I’m a fany-boy for sure. Microsite heaven and looks like fun fun fun. Their USA site is great. They have always been ontop in my books. GBA micro site and their new Wii sites are on track to be remembered for their clean and simple ideas. Me likey.

Pixar
Seriously I would love to work at Pixar, not only do their offices look crazy nice but their work ethic and shear quality are so tops I’m not even sure I could keep up. I’ll bet worklife is both stressfull but so rewarding at the end that it all evens itself out. I would say more stressfull than advertising. of course I would have to relearn a craft I know next to nothing about but its a pipedream anyways, but one hell of one.

ILM – Industrial Light and Magic
Come on I love Star Wars, this is a given.

Apple
Specifically I would love to work in their industrial design office, even tho I’m into GUI’s and stuff hardware design would be hella fun.

Ideally my dream job is a place that lets me work 1 week a month in NYC, that way I can follow my dream of taking classes at the shaolin temple in new york. A job that would allow me to support my family at home. Let jen teach dancing full time like she always has wanted too. Give my kid the things I had when growing up. The means to lead a comfy life with everything taken care of. Work wise I would be able to still do the things I enjoy the most one of which is experimenting with new applications or new uses for different things. It would let me help friends do their thing in a quality way, it would also let me work with clients the way I want to work with them not abide by some set of rules I find all to confining.

Maybe one day I’ll have the means to start an agency the way I would want an agency, build a team or a family that would allow me to do the things I waned to do and do them my way. Pick the clients I felt I related to the most and make work for them that was at a great level both in creativity and in execution. Maybe thats what its going to take, we’ll see what happens.

Last night I really got started on the new franco site. Pulled down the current site and put up a placeholder for new things to come. Its kind of an emotional experience taking down a site you worked hard at. But once the new site gets up I’ll feel better about the whole thing. However this time unlike other projects I’ve done I’ll have the whole thing backed up on my own portfolio site which has taken a backseat to my current workflow at home.

So hopefully if everything goes well then there should be a new Franco catalog site up mid april with some more treats this time included to keep the site bangin.
